Proofreading and revision
At Nouveau, proofreading by the translator is always included in the translation. We also offer separate linguistic quality services. These can be carried out as a separate project phase following translation, or directly into materials produced by the customer.
'Proofreading' refers to the inspection of the document where close attention is paid to spelling and hyphenation errors. Captions, headings and paragraphs are also reviewed during proofreading to ensure that they are in their right places and that images or texts do not overlap.
'Revision' refers to the analysis and editing of content when compared to the source language and other source materials. In addition to grammar, revision addresses language-specific variations and styles.
Vocabularies, term bases, and publication templates
We aim to create a list of terms together with our customers when we start our co-operation. The list is updated regularly. If the translator has access to a customer-specific list of terms, we can guarantee that the correct terms are used in all translations. In addition, the customer saves time, as they do not have to verify every term. We can create a vocabulary or term base for the customer using an existing list of theirs or other material delivered to us. We also offer different types of solutions as publication templates for when a customer would like a vocabulary/term base for internal use (server-based publication template) or to be placed on the internet.
Terms are important to all companies and are often highly standardised. It can be difficult for an outsider to use precisely the correct terms, even if he/she has a good understanding of the industry. All people that participate in creating communication or documentation for a company should use the same terminology from the start. This ensures that the content is understandable, misunderstandings are minimised and the company image remains positive on a more general level. When texts are translated to other languages, the content and accuracy of the terms in the source language becomes more important.
Copywriting
Copywriting is a separate service, which can be done on translated text or on separately delivered ready material. This means in-depth editing or even rewriting of the text so that the end result meets the customer's wishes on how the text should affect the reader. Different styles or other wishes can be included in the work. Copywriting is often included as a part of the delivery process of various company publications and magazines.
Official translations
An official translation is a translation that bears the stamp of a certified translator. These are needed, for example, when dealing with officials in different countries or during international business negotiations. The translation is completed normally; however, once they have seen the original text, the translator's certification allows the translator to stamp the translation as an official and true translation of the text. Official translations are always delivered in paper format.
Translators for hire
We offer our translators for hire, for example, to work on-site with the customer for a few days a month or as agreed. The translator for hire service is used by, among others, large department store chains that have urgent translation assignments on certain days of the month. The service is also a good option when it would be beneficial for the translator to see the products being written about on-site or if, perhaps, the schedules are very tight on those days – this way the translator is fully booked on certain days solely for this specific customer, without a notice period or e-mail correspondence.
Interpretation services
A professional interpreter enables conversations between people that speak different languages. He/she conveys the message from one culture to another and remains strictly unbiased in the situation. All of our interpreters have an appropriate education background and experience with different types of needs of customers, as well as demanding situations. All of our interpreters have signed a non-disclosure agreement and are bound to confidentiality. Our services include business, negotiation, and conference interpretations.
Transcription, dubbing, and captioning
Transcription is the transform of spoken material into written format for further processing. Transcriptions can be translated as usual. We also provide dubbing and captioning services into the languages needed by the customer. The materials can be included, for example, in a video for a website or other company presentations.
Project management
Our project managers are professionals that master their areas and constantly develop their expertise. Keeping contact and communication is easy when your projects are handled by a familiar person. One project manager handles all projects for a specific customer taking all the important issues for that customer into consideration. He/she selects a suitable team for the project and manages it from start to finish. Project managers ensure that all of the agreed issues have been fulfilled and that the customer is satisfied with the end result, both during the project and after its conclusion.
Translation technology and memory tools
We use state of the art industry technology and update it constantly. A majority of our translation projects are completed utilising Trados or Across translation software.
A translation memory is a database, which is created during the translation. It includes both the source and target language text, which is divided into specific length segments. The use of translation memories is particularly useful in large text entities, where only certain sections of the text changes; for example, translations of manuals and updates where existing translations can be utilised using the translation memory. Translation memories also assist in maintaining consistent style and terminology.
Layout and DTP services
In addition to proofreading, layout service is one of the most common additional services. The original document format is maintained with the layout service, even though the language and text length is changed. Nearly all translation projects include layout work to some degree. Challenges are created in layout work by different file formats and the fluctuations in the lengths of the languages.
DTP (Desktop Publishing) is the creation or editing of the appearance of a document. During DTP, the appearance of a document can be altered to match the original using a DTP template, it can be changed into something new, or the entire appearance can be re-created.
Conversions and image handling
We can convert nearly any document into electronic format that can be translated and delivered in the desired format. The translation of a manual in paper format is possible after we covert the content into electronic format and detail it to match the original layout.
Image handling is often done during DTP. In addition, several manuals include images that contain text and the customer who commissioned the translation does not have the original image file. We can edit most image formats and translated the embedded text.
Outsourcing
We can handle the entire translation or product documentation function for a company, which allows our clients to fully focus on their core competences. Operations can be continued at the customer's facility as well as at other premises, utilising different types of technical tools and encrypted data connections.
Consulting and training
We can assess the current status of a client’s information and database management system and make development suggestions for the future. Upon order, we also create different types of systems for transferring materials (FTP channel, designated e-mail addresses for monitoring only by a specific project manager etc.).
We offer training regarding the use and functionality of different types of systems. Our training services include product documentation, translation industry software and systems, and DTP issues. We also offer language training for company groups and private students.
Documentation consulting
Consulting is always completed bearing the best interest of the client company in mind. As the final result, the client will receive a proposal that can be used to save money and improve document production. A typical consulting case will take a few days, during which the customer’s current situation is assessed on-site: quality issues and schedules, current operational procedures, and software and equipment. Needs are assessed based on the current conditions and requests. After this, our professionals design the proposal content, which includes production issues, needs and quality, the scope, company resources, and the software to be acquired and utilized.
